Souk El Had is Agadir’s largest market, a walled souk in the city centre with thousands of stalls selling fresh produce, spices, argan products, ceramics, leather, clothes and household goods. It is one of the best places to see everyday life in Agadir, and a short taxi ride from the beachfront hotels.
Souk El Had layout: how the market is organised
The souk is surrounded by walls with many numbered gates, and stalls are grouped by type of product: fruit and vegetables, spices and dried fruit, olives, crafts, textiles and household items. Note the number of the gate you enter by: it is the easiest way to find your way back out, or to meet up with your group.
Arrive with a simple plan
Check the day’s opening arrangements before travelling. Note your entrance and agree on a meeting point if your group separates. Carry only what you need and ask permission before photographing people or stalls. If you want a guided visit, confirm the scope and fee before starting.
Buy deliberately
For food, cosmetics or souvenirs, ask what the product contains, where it comes from and how it should be stored. Compare the quality and final price rather than buying under pressure. Avoid assuming that every item labelled argan has the same intended use; culinary and cosmetic products serve different purposes.
When to visit Souk El Had
The market is busiest at the weekend, especially on Sunday, when families from the whole region come to shop. For a calmer visit, go on a weekday morning. The souk is generally closed on Mondays, but check the opening arrangements before you travel, especially around public holidays.
Haggling tips
Bargaining is normal for crafts and souvenirs, less so for food. Ask the price, compare at two or three stalls, and make a fair offer with a smile. Agree on the final price before the item is wrapped. Carrying small notes makes paying easier.
Combine the visit sensibly
Leave space afterwards for a meal or a quieter walk. A market visit can be tiring with young children, so plan breaks and a clear return route. Keep the visit separate from any promise of a specific opening time or bargain: both require checking on the day.
